Reading

For the following questions. you need to read the following passage:

The thickness of ice at the North and South Poles tells us a lot about the extent of climate change. In 2019, a team of research scientists set out, prepared for a long, hard winter in the Arctic studying weather patterns and ice coverage, with only creatures such as whales and polar bears for company. Climate change was their focus and timings were important. The research vessel Polarstern had to set off when ice was at a minimum, but needed to be in place atjust the right time to be frozen into the ice sheets which move across the Arctic. Although for some sailors, being trapped in the ice would be a disaster, for the Polarstern crew it was a necessity. lt solved the issue of manually transporting heavy equipment across the vast, icy region around the North Pole.

The Polarstern was commissioned in 1982, and since then the German ship has completed nearly 300 expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. This one, the MOSAiC, was the greatest Arctic expedition of all time, having never gone so deep into the heart of the Arctic before. lt was made up of hundreds of scientists from over 80 institutions from 20 countries. As Professor Markus Rex explained, 'We departed from Norway in September, travelled along the Siberian coast and headed north towards Greenland. The project really began when we switched off the engines and temperatures started to plummet. The sea ice increased and by late November we were surrounded by solid ice and locked into position. lt got progressively colder and in December the ice began to shift, taking the ship with it. This allowed us to establish a network of stations on the ice, with the ship as a central observatory.'

Professor Rex adds, We needed to get Our equipment in place, but relied on the natural flow of the ice. Although snowmobiles are a fast, dependable method of transport for people, they aren't strong enough to transport weighty instruments. We had to wait until the ship drifted to the right place. Temperatures dropped to -50 degrees in January. Polarstern provided shelter, particularly from the severe weather and, to a lesser extent, polar bears - which were both a serious danger to Our crew.'

Polarstern returned to the ship's home port of Bremerhaven in Germany, more than a year after setting off. Knowledge gained from the expedition is helping transform Our understanding of climate change and improve weather predictions around the world. Gaining access to the region in order to carry out ground-based studies is essential, no matter how challenging it may be. Unfortunately, the data showed that the winter ice cap was declining more dramatically than computer simulations had predicted. lt also suggested that vital information was missing and much more research needs to be done.

78. What was NOT the purpose of the research trip?*
